Rausch Creek Season Opener is a Gas!
by Alex Moroz #50A
3 Time national champ Tony D took his show on the road and hosted his first ever Vintage MX School for the North East opener at Rausch Creek Raceway outside of Tremont PA. Tony and three of his finest instructors teamed up to give 16 eager students a full day of instruction on how to go fast and safe. The all inclusive training with individual attention to technical improvement began with a safety primer and moved through a comprehensive set of drills involving Starts, Cone Drills, Power Braking, Strategic Cornering and Jumping. Tony’s passionate love for our sport and expertise came through loud and clear. In addition to the great training tips and lots of fun, the weather was perfect almost all of the day with balmy temperatures and sun! A power lunch was provided by the NE Region along with some real swank Metro Racing Jerseys. Our thanks to Tony D and his fine team of instructors for bringing such a class act MX school to the “Creek”.
As for the season opening race at Rausch creek it was a wet-wet-wet! Rain and more rain came down on Saturday but that did not derail the over 100+ entries that came to race. Rob Feldman and his track support group maintained a safe event for us and braved the cold and rainy conditions that the moto gods bestowed upon us. First class racing by the combined Mid Atlantic and North East region Clubs provided some exciting handle bar banging in the mud. Dave Smeal who resides from Danville PA and rides out of the North East Region triple classed in the mud to take 3 different class wins in the vintage 40+ expert class, the Sportsman 250 expert class, and the post vintage 40+ expert class. Keep a close eye on Dave this year… he may be going for the Triple Crown in the NE and North Atlantic series.
Other notable finishes went to Dave Meakem of Brielle, NJ who won the Grand Prix Open Expert Class, Jeff Thomas out of Virginia Beach, VA won the GP 250 Intermediate Class and to Stewart Fish from Ithaca NY who won the Modern Novice Class.
Mike Mitrione came up from Haddonfield, NJ to take the win in the Sportsman Open Expert Class and Chris Richardson from Houston Texas, now making his home in New Brunswick, NJ took top honors in the Vintage Open Expert Class.
The Mid Atlantic’s own Fred Guidi from Grafton, WV swept the Historic 250 Expert Class and Thor Lawson from Ashland VA grabbed the top honors in the Ultima 250 Expert Class.
Next NE sponsored event is the AHRMA National at Blue Diamond Raceway on May 20th and 21st. This is a Vintage, Post Vintage and Cross-Country National.
See You at the Races!
